Strategic Direction

•  Law-Related Organizations Strategic Planning.

•  The State Bar of California. Primary planner for the State Bar of California providing board governance and strategic planning services, including planning process design, facilitation of Board planning sessions and issue meetings; drafting strategic and operational plans and planning policies for Board review and approval; training Board and staff in effective planning practices; completing organizational departmental planning to build a “culture of continuous improvement” to enhance efficiency and customer service.

•  Inland Counties Legal Services. Provide strategic planning services for legal services provider for low income persons, including facilitating Board and staff strategic planning sessions, drafting strategic and operational plans, and devising and supporting management staff in ongoing action planning procedures.

•  Statewide Court Strategic Planning.

•  Judicial Council of California. Principle staff and project leader for the strategic planning efforts of the Judicial Council of California, the policy-making body for the state's judicial branch, including identify, document, and present strategic planning concepts; organize and facilitate the efforts of judges, court administrators, consultants, and agency executives in developing long range vision for the future; draft, edit, and update the strategic plan; advocate and demonstrate benefits of organizational planning; recommend strategic planning cycles and operational policies and budget procedures to reflect plan objectives; educate and guide court and agency staff to ensure effective implementation of strategic planning.

•  Community-Focused Trial Court Strategic Planning. Principle staff and project leader for the design and implementation of community-focused strategic planning in California's fifty-eight county trial courts, including: design and present a groundbreaking nationally recognized statewide conference on community-focused court planning; script, edit and produce of a 3-video set of community-focused court planning training materials; and provide staff leadership for the Implementation Committee responsible for continuing support and guidance for trial court planning activities.

Judicial Branch Education Strategic Planning. Design and implement strategic planning processes for California Center for Judicial Education and Research and the Missouri Commission on Judicial Department Education, including: facilitating strategic planning sessions, and preparing statewide judicial education strategic plans and Missouri Education Committees' operational and action plans.

Policy Governance

•  Effective Board Stewardship. Provided assistance in board and organizational development efforts of the Judicial Council of California, the State Bar of California, the Missouri Commission on Judicial Education, and Washington Judicial Board of Continuing Education and Judicial College Board of Trustees, and numerous non-profit organizations. Assisted in clarifying policy-setting role, refining the structure of committees, drafting and refining Board governance policies and practices including Board/Staff Relations, improving Board and staff work products, and aligning board governance with strategic planning processes.

•  Board Leadership. Four-year member of the Board of Directors of the California Center for Wildlife (now Wildcare), a non-profit corporation dedicated to wildlife rehabilitation and public education. Involvement included service as President of the Board, Chair of the Development Committee, and Chair of the Executive Director Search Committee. Initiated and facilitated improvements to internal operations (budgeting, wildlife clinic operations, computer system development) and other aspects of organizational and board development, including preparation of by-laws and revision of personnel policies.

Community Collaboration

•  Special Task Force on Court/Community Outreach. Principle staff to Special Task Force. Responsible for research design and development of implementation recommendations adopted by the Judicial Council of California, including drafting a first-of-its-kind standard of judicial administration that recognizes judicial involvement in community collaboration activities as “an official judicial function.

•  Handbook. Primary author of court and community collaboration compendium, Dialogue: Courts Reaching Out to Their Communities — A Handbook for Court and Community Collaboration.

•  Training. Contributing faculty for development and presentation of two-day Court and Community Collaboration course for judges and court staff designed to introduce community collaboration concept and models and to address ethical considerations.
